I find that my kitchen can quickly become the most cluttered space in my home if I’m not being intentional with the things that I bring into it. Most of us cook every day and we need certain kitchen appliances to do it. With that being said, I have found that some are just not worth having around.
Below is a list of seven kitchen appliances you shouldn’t own as a minimalist.
1. Toaster
When it comes to owning kitchen appliances as a minimalist, my first rule is to only keep ones around if they serve at least a dual purpose. A toaster is not one of those things.
My toaster was the first appliance I got rid of when I was planning to downsize my kitchen. I was excited to be rid of the constant crumbs that fell out of it and onto my kitchen counter each time I used it.
I now use the ‘broil’ option on my oven to toast my bread instead. So long as you are keeping a close eye on it (or it’ll burn!) it is just as quick and easy as using a toaster!
2. Electric Kettle
An electric kettle is another kitchen appliance that doesn’t serve a dual purpose and can easily be replaced by one that does. I use my stovetop to boil water in a small pot instead of using a kettle.
3. Microwave
I haven’t owned a microwave since college and neither should you! Heating up food is just as easy to do in an oven or on a stove top.
4. Kitchen Gadgets (avocado peeler, egg slicer, garlic press, etc)
There is definitely no shortage of interesting gadgets that make cooking just a little bit easier. Although pressing your garlic instead of mincing it will take less time, if your goal is to have a minimalist kitchen, you’ll need to prioritize owning less over saving those few minutes.
5. Rice Cooker
Unless you are making rice every day, I would skip out on owning a rice cooker. It is just as easy to make yummy rice on a stovetop. Most bags of rice have stovetop cooking instructions written right on them to take the guesswork out of it.
6. Air Fryer
As many of us were, I was a victim of the air frying phase in 2020. I was sold on the convenience and versatility of them. Unfortunately, I only used mine a few times before storing it away and resorting back to my tried and true cooking techniques. If you have a similar story, get rid of that air fryer once and for all!
7. Stand Mixer
There are plenty of kitchen appliances that do too much for the ordinary home cook. A stand mixer is one of those. They usually come with all sorts of attachments that you’ll never reach for. Unless you are baking cakes regularly, I would skip out on having one. Instead, opt for a simple hand mixer or emulsion blender.
In Conclusion
The more space you have in your kitchen, the less stressful cooking will be for you. With all of the kitchen appliances on the market, it is easy to find yourself buying ones you don’t really need. As a minimalist, I avoid appliances that have only one use, won’t get used weekly or have unnecessary attachments.
